CORTLAND, N.Y. -- What's less of a problem, an interception or a sack?

True to form, Mark Sanchez was picked off by Antonio Cromartie in team drills on Wednesday. Geno Smith was sacked twice.

Smith appeared to struggle with accuracy early on -- Isaiah Trufant picked one of his passes in 1-on-1 drills -- but he got better during team drills playing with the second-team offense. Smith was 5-for-6 with two sacks in the team segment. He did waver when the first-team defense was subbed in on four snaps, with the slow-to-organize offense called for a penalty before Smith completed a pass to WR Ryan Spadola. That completion, however, was followed by a sack before the second-team defense came back in.

Sanchez looked steady early on, but was 3-for-10 in the team portion, with an interception, a drop and a touchdown pass to Vidal Hazelton. On the interception, Sanchez's pass to Ben Obomanu was tipped up and Cromartie grabbed it.

WR Stephen Hill, going into his second season, chased one Sanchez pass, running full speed. Hill got hands on but didn't come down with. Hill later said it came to his blind side and he didn't quite see it.

Sanchez wasn't the only quarterback who had a demerit. Matt Simms was picked off by cornerback Donnie Fletcher.

PRACTICE HITS: RB John Griffin fumbled the ball. Muhammad Wilkerson nearly picked Sanchez and Nick Folk (3-for-3) again edged Billy Cundiff (2-for-3) in the kicking competition. Folk appeared to film the punt segment with an iPad.

MILLINER CAPS PRACTICE: Rookie cornerback Dee Milliner was out in pads for the first time after a contract dispute kept him out of training camp. Milliner worked with the first team in individual drills, but stayed on the sideline during the team portion. He said they were being cautious in the wake of offseason shoulder surgery, though coach Rex Ryan said he hoped to have Milliner in the mix for the Green & White scrimmage Saturday.

SPLASH OF COLON: Offensive lineman Willie Colon, who is finding his voice on offense, got into a scuffle with Lanier Coleman during an O-line/D-line drill. There was a lot of laughing afterward. Colon was an acquisition in the offseason and has already impressed Ryan. OL Brian Winters worked with the first-team offensive line at left guard, while Colon moved to right guard. Ryan said Stephen Peterman, who usually plays with the first team O-line, had a shoulder issue.

YEAR OF THE CAT: Ryan said the Jets will run more Wildcat this season and the Cortland practices, open to the public, reflect that.

PLAY NICE: Obomanu and safety Bret Lockett got into a heated, prolonged discussion during the special teams segment. Eventually, Obomanu got in his face yelling, "You ain't made a play all training camp!" But Lockett didn't bite, saying, "Chill out!"

ATTENDANCE REPORT: DL Sheldon Richardson rode the bike after a dental issue was diagnosed. Ryan said the rookie might need a root canal. Antonio Garay took his place in the lineup. ... RB Chris Ivory (hamstring) participated in individual drills but not team. That's five practices both Ivory and Mike Goodson, the free-agent RB who hasn't shown up to camp, have missed. ... Two of the three wides who sat on Monday had returned to the lineup: Jordan White and Joseph Collins. Marcus Davis was not in drills. Clyde Gates was slow to get up after taking a dive after missing a Smith pass on 7-on-7s and had his hand checked by trainers. He came back in and had another solid practice. WR Titus Ryan was looked at by trainers and didn't finish practice.
