A year ago, the New York Jets' top draft pick -- Dee Milliner -- showed up a few days late for training camp because of a contract dispute. They won't have that problem this season, as first-round pick Calvin Pryor finalized his contract Monday.

Pryor signed the standard four-year contract, plus a fifth-year team option. Based on the rookie slotting system, his entire deal is worth $8.56 million, fully guaranteed. It includes a signing bonus of about $4.5 million.

That the two sides were able to avoid a repeat of last summer is important, because Pryor is expected to be a Week 1 starter at safety. He was drafted 18th overall and impressed the coaches in the recent rookie minicamp. Of course, Milliner still was in the opening-day lineup despite his late arrival, although he struggled and ended up getting benched in Week 2.

Pryor was a surprise pick for the Jets. Many observers figured they'd pick a cornerback or wide receiver in the first round, but they began to target Pryor once the top corners and receivers were gone. He was the first safety off the board.

Pryor played three seasons at Louisville, recording seven interceptions, eight forced fumbles and two sacks. He was nicknamed the "Louisville Slugger" because of his hard-hitting style of play.
