Jets promote Matt Simms, adding QB insurance

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- With Geno Smith listed as questionable with a right-shoulder injury, the New York Jets added quarterback insurance Saturday, signing Matt Simms from the practice squad.

Michael Vick will start Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, but the No. 2 spot remains a question. Smith, hurt in last week's loss to the Buffalo Bills, practiced fully on Thursday and Friday. Coach Rex Ryan expressed optimism that the demoted Smith will be able to assume the No. 2 role.

Obviously, there is some question about that. By adding Simms before the 4 p.m. Saturday deadline, the Jets have the option of waiting until the pre-game warmups before making a decision. Ryan has said in the past he doesn't like dressing three quarterbacks.

Simms appeared in three games last season, completing 16 of 31 passes for 156 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

To make room for Simms, the Jets released wide receiver Chris Owusu.

As expected, cornerback Darrin Walls (calf) was downgraded to out.
