Aaron Maybin, cameo actor, is ready for a larger role in the Jets' defensive production.
After producing three sacks and three forced fumbles in 40-plus defensive snaps over four games, the undersized pass rusher has earned more playing time, according to Rex Ryan.
"We need to get him on the field more," Ryan said Monday.
It just so happens that the Jets' next game is against the Bills, the team that drafted Maybin 11th overall in 2009 -- and the team that cut him in the preseason after two seasons without a sack. Last week, Maybin admitted that the Buffalo game was circled his calendar.
Maybin was a Gholston-like washout with the Bills, but he's producing with the Jets, in part, because they're not asking him to play every down, obviously. Heck, he's only 225 pounds, Ryan said. He's being used as a pass-rushing specialist.
"If you're looking at him as an every-down player, maybe that's not the guy," Ryan said. "But for us, just being in a pass-rushing mode, he can do that ... The thing you love about him is, man, he's relentless. He plays with that heart and motor."
Maybin's nickname is "Mayhem," which he likes. It likes it so much that it's his vanity plate. Ryan, who has been known to cause a little mayhem himself, loves the nickname.
"It fits him," he said. "You guys (reporters) talk to him. You know what I'm talking about."
Let's just say Maybin isn't the most humble, soft-spoken guy around.
