During my Friday chat session, a few people raised the issue of Mark Sanchez's playmaking ability outside the pocket, noting he does well in those situations and wondering why he doesn't get more chances. I checked with ESPN Stats & Information and, sure enough, there's a significant difference between his production outside the pocket vs. inside the pocket.
OUTSIDE THE POCKET
18-for-34 ... 52.9% ... 186 yards ... 4 TDs ... 1 INT ... 96.0 passer rating (8th NFL)
Note: The only QBs with a better rating are Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Tony Romo, Matt Moore, Donovan McNabb and Jason Campbell. So now you're thinking, why doesn't Sanchez have more than 34 attempts? That number is 18th in the league. The busiest out-of-pocket QBs are Colt McCoy (62 attempts) and Matt Schaub (57).
INSIDE THE POCKET
192-for-339 ... 56.6% ... 2,327 yards ... 14 TDs ... 10 INTs ... 79.4 rating (T23rd NFL)
Notes: The only QBs with lower ratings are Rex Grossman, Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Cassel, Kyle Orton, McNabb, Flacco, Curtis Painter, Sam Bradford, Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert.
