Baron Davis' role

Baron Davis will have a multi-faceted role with the Knicks this season: He will spend some time around the team in an advisory role; he will work with Madison Square Garden's "Garden of Dreams" Foundation; he's expected to provide content for MSG's in-game entertainment and he may do some scouting for the team, according to two sources with knowledge of Davis' agreement with the Knicks.

Davis, 33, suffered a serious right knee injury in last season's playoffs, and is expected to miss the entire 2012-13 season.

He's currently an unrestricted free agent, but the veteran point guard has maintained close ties with the team. He's spent a significant time rehabbing his injury at the team facility and he maintains a close relationship with several players.

Management approached Davis about working around the team during the offseason, and Davis agreed.

Davis will not sit on the bench during games and is not expected to have an official title within the organization.

The former first-round pick still hopes to return to the court at some point.

"I hope I return. I want to come back," Davis said in late June. "I want to be a Knick for the rest of my career. ... Playing in the Garden and the people, the fans. I feel like New York is the mecca of basketball. This was the best stage, for who I am, to give back to the community and play for a top-notch organization."

Davis suffered partial tear of his right patella tendon and complete tears of the right anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments during Game 4 of the Heat-Knicks first-round series last spring.

He underwent successful surgery in May and is expected to be out until May 2013.
