Mets' Steven Matz breezes through rehab appearance

PHILADELPHIA -- Maybe rookie left-hander Steven Matz is ready to return to the New York Mets without another rehab start.

Matz allowed one hit in six scoreless innings for Double-A Binghamton on Wednesday night against Erie. Matz, returning from a lat strain, retired the final 16 batters he faced in a 56-pitch performance.

Mets manager Terry Collins suggested before Wednesday's game that Matz likely would need an additional rehab start to continue building his pitch count.
