Mets designate Tim Stauffer for assignment

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets designated veteran right-hander Tim Stauffer for assignment to clear the 40-man roster spot for the addition of shortstop Matt Reynolds. Reynolds replaces Ruben Tejada on the division series roster.

Stauffer, 33, had a 7.94 ERA in five late-season relief appearances for the Mets.

Because of his major league service time, which came primarily with the San Diego Padres, Stauffer was ticketed to become a free agent after the World Series anyway.

The Mets had no intention of using Stauffer in the postseason. They sent him home after the regular-season finale.
