Mets believe Bartolo Colon prefers to start, which means signing elsewhere

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Assistant GM John Ricco and fellow New York Mets executives have met with Bartolo Colon's agent during the GM Meetings. But while the Mets are open to Colon returning for a bullpen role, the expectation is he will choose to be a starter elsewhere.

“From what I understand, he is interested in coming back,” Ricco said Tuesday afternoon. “But he’s going to go out on the market and look and see. I would imagine he prefers to be a starter. While he might be open to relieving, that might be a secondary thing for him. We haven’t had any detailed conversations. I talked to his agent about a number of players, including Bartolo. But it’s very early, and we really just talked about how happy we were with what he did for us.”

Colon, 42, went 14-13 with a 4.16 ERA during the regular season for the Mets. He then capably pitched out of the bullpen during the postseason.
