Bob Geren departure fueled by family matters

NEW YORK -- Bob Geren, who is leaving the New York Mets for the same bench coach role with the Los Angeles Dodgers, indicated that the decision was fueled by family priorities.

"It was a very tough decision, but I am headed to L.A.," Geren said. "Both my wife and I have aging parents and extended family in Southern California. It's not often you get a chance in baseball to work that close to home and to your family. I'm going to miss everything about New York and the Mets. It was a wonderful four years."

Third base coach Tim Teufel appears the logical person to move to bench coach. The Mets hope to fill the vacancy on the staff from within. Binghamton manager Pedro Lopez, a former minor league catcher, should be a candidate.
