PAWTUCKET 15, BUFFALO 1: Tony Thomas hit his second grand slam in three days and J.C. Linares added a three-run shot as the Bisons fell to 2-3 on the season. Buffalo didn't help their own cause, committing four fielding errors. The Red Sox did the bulk of their damage in the middle innings. Already holding a 1-0 advantage, Pawtucket plated three more in the fourth inning and then chased starter Casey Fossum four batters into the fifth. Linares greeted newly promoted reliever Dylan Owen with a three-run home run to give the PawSox an 8-0 lead. The PawSox scored six more in the sixth inning, with Thomas clearing the bases with a slam to right field. Buffalo broke up the shutout bid in the seventh inning as Kirk Nieuwenhuis doubled and scored when Pawtucket shortstop Jose Iglesias missed played Raul Chavez's grounder. The Bisons' offense couldn't get going despite the addition of 2010 MVP Lucas Duda. Optioned from the Mets on Sunday night, the slugger started in right field and reached on an error in four trips to the plate. Owen was promoted earlier in the day from Double-A Binghamton. The Bisons placed Boof Bonser on the disabled list after the starter left Sunday's game following 3 2/3 innings. Box

ERIE 7, BINGHAMTON 3: Brahiam Maldonado and Kai Gronauer homered to give Binghamton an early lead, but Erie’s four-run seventh inning propelled the SeaWolves past the B-Mets at Jerry Uht Park. Bryan Pounds was the offensive hero for Erie with a 3-for-4 night, including the game-tying and game-winning RBIs, in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively. Erie (3-2) got on the board first with a run in the third. Binghamton starter Brandon Moore retired the first six hitters he faced before walking Audy Ciriaco to start the frame. Ciriaco took second on a Moore balk. Deik Scram joined Ciriaco on base with a hard-hit single to left. Ciriaco was about to stop at third, but saw the ball squirt through Maldonado in left and roll to the wall, allowing him to score. Maldonado atoned for the mistake in the fourth, however. After Eric Campbell singled with two outs, Maldonado muscled a majestic home run to left off SeaWovles starter Mark Sorenson to vault Binghamton (2-3) into the lead, 2-1. Gronauer added to the lead in the fifth with a one-out homer off Sorenson for his first Double-A long ball. The SeaWolves countered in their half of the fifth to tie the score. Scram led off with a double. Two batters later, he scored on a double by Jamie Johnson, cutting the B-Mets lead to one. After Moore got Brandon Douglas to fly out for the second out of the inning, Roy Merritt entered. The lefty reliever proceeded to walk Michael Bertram before allowing a game-tying single to Pounds. Moore was charged with three runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings in his 2011 debut. Sorenson sported a similar line with three runs allowed over five innings. Neither hurler factored in the decision. With the score tied, the battle of the bullpens leaned toward Erie as Austin Wood took over for Sorenson in the sixth. The southpaw would go on to hurl three hitless innings with six strikeouts to earn the win. Meanwhile, the SeaWolves’ bats came to life in the seventh. Jamie Johnson worked a leadoff walk against Eric Niesen. After Douglas popped out to Gronauer on a botched bunt, Bertram singled to left, setting the stage for Pounds. With runners at the corners, the Erie designated hitter smoked a double off the wall in left to plate Johnson with the winning run. A wild pitch and RBI singles from Francisco Martinez and Ciriaco capped the scoring at four runs in the frame. Niesen was tagged with the loss. He was charged with three earned runs in a third of an inning. Binghamton looks to even the series Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. in the middle game of the three-game set. Right-hander Josh Stinson (1-0, 0.00) will take the hill for the B-Mets against right-hander Jacob Turner. Box

HICKORY 9, SAVANNAH 1: Four Hickory Crawdads pitchers combined to hold the Gnats to three hits, and the Crawdads pulled away late in Hickory, N.C. The Gnats are now 1-3 on their season-opening seven-game road trip. Opening Night at Historic Grayson Stadium is this Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Crawdads (3-2) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run from DH Andrew Clark. The Gnats scored their only run in the second to pull within one at 2-1 on DH Javier Rodriguez’s second home run of the year. However, the Crawdads answered back with two runs off starter Erik Goeddel in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. Hickory added a run in the seventh and four in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Angel Cuan to establish the final margin. The Gnats will send right-hander Gonzalez Germen to the mound Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Hickory right-hander Roman Mendez. Box
