Justin Turner said former Mets bench coach Ken Oberkfell, who recently resumed managing Escogido in the Dominican Republic, reached out to him last week in order to see if Turner might want to complete the winter-ball season.

Turner passed. His reasoning: He felt gassed after playing in the Dominican Republic last winter, then completing a full major league season.

"I felt a little tired, ran down," Turner said.

Turner is in an interesting position, not being assured of a bench spot. After all, the Mets will be looking to sign another infielder who can capably back up Ruben Tejada at shortstop, and there are only so many spots on the bench.

Still, Turner figures, Tejada moving to shortstop could increase his opportunity to play.

"Hopefully," Turner said. "I'd like to think that. Maybe I earned a chance to play second base this year. Maybe I earned that last year."
