Torres optimistic absence will be short

Andres Torres, who strained his left calf muscle on a second-inning catch Tuesday night, said the injury is improving and predicted only a short-term absence.

Torres said he will treat the injury conservatively -- he will not even attempt to run today. He was examined by a team doctor in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday who labeled him day-to-day. Torres did not require an MRI.

"I feel better. Just a few more days, I hope, I'll go back to the field," Torres said. "It's just a mild injury. At least I'm better. Today I feel a little better. I'll go day by day and see how I feel. But I don't want to rush it, too. That's something that you want to make sure that it's fine. I saw the doctor. He said just go a few more days, give it a rest, and see how I feel."
