New York Mets
Chris Schwinden will vacate one of the two roster spots that need to be opened for the promotion of right-handed reliever Elvin Ramirez and activation of catcher Josh Thole from the disabled list, a major league source told ESPNNewYork.com.
Schwinden was placed on waivers by the Mets on Thursday, the source said. That maneuver would free a 40-man roster spot for Ramirez.
The 25-year-old Schwinden is 0-1 with a 12.46 ERA in 8 2/3 innings at the major league level this season. He has made three appearances (two starts).
The Mets still will need to free a 25-man roster spot for Thole. Assuming the Mets do not go with three catchers -- which would not seem likely -- Mike Nickeas would appear far more vulnerable than Rob Johnson for a demotion.
