With the Mets needing to create roster space for Chris Young and Miguel Batista on Tuesday, reliever Jack Egbert will lose not only his 25- but also his 40-man roster spot.
Egbert, 29, was in a holding pattern late Monday since he will need to clear waivers before being permitted to return to Triple-A Buffalo.
Young is starting Tuesday's game in D.C. The Mets not only need to create a 25-man roster spot for him, but also a spot on the 40-man roster, since Young re-signed with the organization on a minor league deal -- not a major league deal -- late in spring training.
Egbert, who hails from Rutherford, N.J., and played at Rutgers, appeared in one game for the Mets. He recorded two outs in relief of Manny Acosta to close out an 8-4 loss to the Phillies, after which Acosta was designated for assignment. Egbert's only other major league action came in 2008 with the Chicago White Sox.
