Mejia's insertion into the rotation roughly coincides with Matt Harvey reaching an innings limit and being shut down for the season. Harvey starts Wednesday against the Washington Nationals, then makes one additional start.
On Friday night, Mejia made his first major league appearance since Sept. 15, 2010.
Terry Collins said he also hoped to get Jeurys Familia a start later in the month, but it was not assured. Collins' script does have Familia making a late-season start, but pitching coach Dan Warthen's version currently does not -- so there needs to be a meeting of the minds.
Regardless, Collins said he can foresee scenarios this month in which he completes a game by using two starters -- one for five innings, the second pitcher for the final four innings. Chris Young, Mejia and Familia would be the candidates for that role, according to the manager.
