Mets won't skip, scrap Jeremy Hefner

CHICAGO -- Terry Collins said there are no plans to use Thursday's team off-day to skip Jeremy Hefner's turn, much less bounce the right-hander from the rotation. After Hefner surrendered four runs in the fourth inning Saturday and departed an eventual 8-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs, Collins said he would prefer to use the team day off to give each of his other starters an extra day of rest.

So look for Hefner to start against the Atlanta Braves on Friday at Citi Field.

Hefner fell to 0-5 with a 5.00 ERA after being charged with four runs on five hits and two walks in four innings. The Mets are winless in his eight starts.

“He just fell behind in counts," Collins said. "When he got behind, he had some three-ball counts that he didn’t have earlier. And then he had to come around the plate. When he came around the plate, they put it in play.”

Said Hefner, who gave up a two-run double to opposing pitcher Scott Feldman: "Anybody with a bat in their hands can be a hitter. So I need to make a better pitch there."

As for being winless, Hefner said: "I wouldn't say it's weighing on me, but I want to win. I want the team to win. Obviously we didn't do that today. So I've got to make some adjustments and be better."
