          NEW YORK -- During a follow-up exam for neck discomfort Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Bobby Parnell received an injection to try to quiet the issue, a baseball source told ESPNNewYork.

          Parnell is likely to be placed on the disabled list.

          Players typically cannot appear for a couple of days after receiving anti-inflammatory injections anyway. And Parnell has not appeared in a game since last Tuesday, meaning a 15-day DL stint can be backdated. He would be eligible to be activated from the DL next Thursday.

          How the Mets will handle closing in Parnell's absence is not clear. David Aardsma blew Friday's save chance. So LaTroy Hawkins or Gonzalez Germen might get the next shot. Or, if the Mets face a string of lefties in the ninth, perhaps Pedro Feliciano or Scott Rice gets a chance.
