WASHINGTON -- The Mets have not made the official call, but a team official acknowledged it is "likely" closer Bobby Parnell is done for the season.

It remains unresolved whether Parnell will require surgery on the herniated disc in his neck. He has not appeared in a major league game since July 30. The season ends Sept. 29, and Parnell remains in New York, mostly inactive.

LaTroy Hawkins should handle the bulk of the closing duty down the stretch, although the Mets would like to get a look at Gonzalez Germen in that role, ideally in a non-pressure-filled spot.

As for Vic Black, the Triple-A closer acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates, it is unlikely he would get closing opportunities in September. Black is due to join the Mets on Sunday at Nationals Park, once rosters expand.

"I've heard he's got a good arm," Collins said. "I saw a report that said in Double-A he was voted the best slider."
