Outfielder Jaff Decker, who was designated for assignment by the San Diego Padres this week, could be a fit as the Mets look to reconstruct their outfield for 2014, a baseball official unaffiliated with the New York ballclub predicted to ESPNNewYork.com.
The 23-year-old Decker, a lefty hitter who plays all three outfield positions, made his major league debut on June 20 with San Diego. He went on to hit .154 in 26 at-bats. Decker hit .286 with 10 homers and 40 RBIs in 350 at-bats with Triple-A Tucson. He also had a .381 on-base percentage, making him the type of player that fits the Mets' philosophy.
Decker was a first-round pick (42nd overall) in 2008 by San Alderson's Padres. Alderson has been known to make waiver claims and sign players to minor league contracts from that organization.
