NHL heading to Citi Field?

NEW YORK -- Could an outdoor NHL game come to Citi Field?

A senior Mets source told ESPNNewYork.com that the team has had discussions with the league about the possibility in the future.

"We're always talking with various entities about bringing big events to Citi Field," the source said. "We did have discussions with the NHL and are always open to revisiting them down the road."

With the success of the two Stadium Series games at Yankee Stadium recently, it's hard to imagine the Mets wouldn't want to bring an event of that magnitude to the Queens-based ballpark.

"We loved having the event and would welcome it back," Yankees team president Randy Levine said.

Levine added that the decision is completely up to the NHL.

Sunday's matinee between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils and Wednesday night's game between the Rangers and New York Islanders drew a combined 100,132 fans, despite the chilly temperatures.

Though an event again in New York next winter is unlikely -- reports have suggested there will be four outdoor games with San Jose, Phoenix, Colorado, Boston, Minnesota, Columbus and Toronto all teams that appear to have interest in hosting -- it could be an intriguing possibility in the future.

Whether it's a legitimate possibility remains to be seen, but a league source said the lines of communication will remain open.
