          PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Bobby Parnell, whose fastball registered 88-89 mph Wednesday, in his second Grapefruit League appearance, said that is relatively normal for this time of year.

          "The difference between this outing and last outing was night and day. It was way better," said Parnell, who underwent Sept. 10 surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck. "My timing was a lot better. I felt like the ball was coming out a lot better. So as the inning went on, the confidence kept growing."

          Parnell's fastball averaged 95 mph last regular season. The closer noted that his peak in-season velocity generally does not occur until May at the earliest anyway.

          "I'm not worried about that. I think everything is right in line," he said. "... The [ninety] sixes and sevens and eights usually are a month or a month and a half into it. It takes a little bit of time."
