SAN FRANCISCO -- With the Mets on a five-game losing streak, David Wright tried to convince his manager late Saturday that he ought to be in the starting lineup for the series finale against the Giants.
Terry Collins remained steadfast that Wright would sit for the first time this season.
"There's a reason why he's David Wright," Collins said. "I just said, 'Hey, look, we certainly didn't plan on losing five in a row. But we've been planning this for a while that this was going to be a time off, coinciding with tomorrow (team off-day), where you can really rest up.' The homestand is going to be huge for us. It still is. And I said, 'I know it's a tough time for you, but I'm not sure there's ever a good time to take the star out of your lineup.'
"As I told him last night, 'The only thing I'm not going to have happen is what happened last year, and that's overextend you and then lose you for a month.'"
