New York Mets
NEW YORK -- Bobby Abreu is back.
The Mets re-signed the veteran outfielder to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Presumably, he would return to the major league club once rosters expand Sept. 1.
The Mets had designated the 40-year-old Abreu for assignment on Aug. 5 and formally released him five days later.
Abreu was hitless in his final 22 at-bats as a pinch hitter and 2-for-31 during the season in that role. Overall, he hit .238 with one home run and 14 RBIs in 122 at-bats with the Mets.
