WASHINGTON -- Terry Collins and Travis d'Arnaud kept the precise issue close to the vest, but the rookie catcher became banged up enough Tuesday that he plans to see a doctor in D.C. and is not in the lineup Wednesday.
The Mets, generally fairly open with player injuries, do not want to tip off the Houston Astros, who visit Citi Field this weekend, about what is ailing d'Arnaud. So they were not very forthcoming with the issue. Still, teams have been running wild on the rookie catcher anyway, so it is unlikely to affect the Astros' game-planning.
One person briefed said d'Arnaud had the flu, although it's unclear if that's the lone issue.
"I got banged up last night," d'Arnaud coyly said. "... It's just September. Everybody has got their little things. I'm going to get it checked out and make sure everything is good."
D'Arnaud said he expected to play again this season.
