PHOENIX -- Now this would have made an interesting pairing: The Mets, in need of a shortstop, spoke with the Philadelphia Phillies about acquiring Jimmy Rollins in a trade, sources told ESPNNewYork.com. The pursuit since has been dismissed because Rollins does not want to leave Philadelphia, a source added.
Rollins, as a longtime Phillie, has full no-trade protection. He will earn $11 million next season, then is eligible for free agency.
Rollins, of course, authored the infamous "Team to Beat" line in 2007, when the Phillies overcame a seven-game deficit with 17 games to play to catch the Mets.
