NEW YORK -- The Mets non-tendered Eric Young Jr. on Tuesday, making him a free agent. The arbitration-eligible Young had been projected to earn roughly $2.25 million in 2015.
He hit .229 with one homer, 17 RBIs and 30 steals in 36 attempts in 280 at-bats in 2014. He had a .299 on-base percentage.
The projected starting outfield for the Mets next season is Curtis Granderson in left field, Juan Lagares in center field and newcomer Michael Cuddyer in right field.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who is out of options and cannot be sent to the minors without being exposed to waivers, is projected to claim one backup spot.
The Mets are searching for a righty-hitting backup outfielder to complement that group as an upgrade over corner infielder/outfielder Eric Campbell.
