SAN DIEGO -- The Mets have addressed one of their needs, signing John Mayberry Jr. to a one-year deal to serve as a righty bat for the bench. He will earn $1.45 million, with the chance for performance bonuses.
Mayberry, who turns 31 later this month, may start in the outfield against left-handed pitching, allowing Terry Collins to use Michael Cuddyer at first base over Lucas Duda if the manager chooses.
Mayberry was non-tendered by the Toronto Blue Jays on Dec. 2.
He hit a combined .212 with seven homers and 23 RBIs in 146 at-bats this past season with Toronto and the Philadelphia Phillies. That included hitting .243 with five homers in 70 at-bats against southpaws.
The deal, still unannounced, is pending a physical. The terms were agreed to late Wednesday night.
