Lopez on future: 'I don't know'

What does the future hold for Brook Lopez?

“I don’t know [if I’m going to be with the team in Brooklyn],” Lopez told reporters Thursday, according to the New York Daily News. “I’d like to be, but there’s a lot of uncertainty, so I don’t know.”

What is known is that Lopez is unlikely to receive an extension from the Nets before the Jan. 25 deadline, and will likely become a restricted free agent come July 1. The 23-year-old center is currently recovering from foot surgery, which he underwent on Dec. 23.

Lopez hasn’t had any setbacks -- he’s no longer wearing a boot and did some standstill shooting on Thursday again -- and is expected to be back sometime in early-to-mid February based on the original six-to-eight

week timetable.

It makes little sense for the Nets to extend Lopez. They don’t know how his foot is going to respond when he returns, and they want to maintain cap space heading into the offseason for a potential pursuit of Orlando center Dwight Howard.

• The Daily News also reported that small forward Damion James (foot) will miss at least the next two games, and forward Shawne Williams (ankle) will miss Saturday night’s game against the Thunder.
