Phil Useless

TORONTO -- Phil Hughes' day is over after 4 2/3 innings and the Yankees are a lot worse off for it. Hughes unraveled in a disastrous fifth inning in which he allowed a two-run home run to Brett Lawrie, rebounded to get two outs, and then surrendered three more hard-hit singles, the last of which, by Moises Sierra, knocked in another run and gave Toronto a 5-1 lead.

At that point, Joe Girardi collected Hughes and brought in Derek Lowe, who got the final out of the inning on a fly out to the wall in left-center.

Hughes' line was ugly -- 4-2/3 IP, 8 H, 5 ER -- but not quite as bad as his last appearance at the Rogers Centre, on August 12, in which allowed a season-high 7 runs in 4 IP. In his last two games here, the dome has been a house of horrors for Hughes; his ERA for those two outings is an unsightly 11.76.
