Source: Yankees, Infante 'too far apart'

NEW YORK -- The Yankees and free-agent second baseman Omar Infante are separated by approximately $16 million and one year, a gap that a source with knowledge of the negotiations told ESPNNewYork.com was "too far apart" to make a deal likely at this time.

According to the source, the Yankees have offered a three-year contract worth $24 million for the soon-to-be 32-year-old Infante, who hit .318 with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs and had a .345 OBP for the Detroit Tigers last season.

Infante is said to be seeking a four-year deal for $40 million. The source said the Yankees' offer would stand but in the meantime, the club would explore the possibility of a deal for Stephen Drew, who batted .253 with 13 HRs, 67 RBIs and a .333 OBP with the World Series champion Boston Red Sox in 2013, or consider going with the veteran Kelly Johnson, who they signed to a one-year, $3 million contract earlier this month. Johnson batted .235 with 16 HRs, 52 RBIs and a .305 OBP for the Tampa Bay Rays last season.
