How much value are the Yankees getting out of their highest-paid players in 2014?

The answer: very little.

We used Fangraphs as a reference, and the results aren’t pretty.

Note that the middle category, “value,” represents what they should be making this season. We know there’s a love/hate relationship with WAR, but for our purposes, this is how “value” is computed. We also realize this isn’t the end-all-be-all method to evaluate these players, but we found it interesting, and perhaps, you will too.

1. CC Sabathia: 0.2 WAR, $1.1 million value, $12.9 million actual salary

2. Mark Teixeira: 0.9 WAR, $4.9 million value, $12.6 million actual salary

3. Masahiro Tanaka 3.2 WAR, $17.5 million value, $12.3 million actual salary

4. Jacoby Ellsbury 2.0 WAR, $10.9 million value, $11.8 million actual salary

5. Brian McCann 0.9 WAR, $5 million value, $9.5 million actual salary

6. Hiroki Kuroda 1.6 WAR, $8.9 million value, $9 million actual salary

7. Carlos Beltran -0.8 WAR, -$4.5 million value, $8.4 million actual salary

8. Derek Jeter 0.7 WAR, $3.6 million value, $6.7 million actual salary

In total: 8.7 WAR, $47.7 million value, $83.2 million actual salary.

Also, note that the actual salary is prorated, based on approximately 56 percent of the season being played.

For comparison:

WAR Leader Mike Trout: 5.3 WAR, $29 million value, $560K million actual salary

To be fair, Tanaka, before going down with a partially torn UCL, has been everything the Yankees could’ve asked for and more, while Ellsbury has performed admirably -- hitting out of the No. 3 slot in the batting order.

Otherwise, it’s been little bang for a lot of buck.
