Mound Visit: Yankees' Dellin Betances got business tip from Derek Jeter

TAMPA, Fla. -- Dellin Betances grew up a Yankees fan and even attended David Wells' perfect game. He is now a two-time All-Star and part of what could be the game's best bullpen this season.

Off the field, Betances is a gentle giant, about as kind a guy as any on his team. We sat down with him to learn a little more about his interests in our latest mound visit.

What is your favorite film?

I loved Training Day with Denzel Washington.

What is your favorite music?

What is your favorite group?

I love Jay Z, obviously, coming from New York. That's who I usually listen to -- Jay Z, Biggie Smalls.

What is a hidden talent you have?

I like playing poker. I don't know if that is hidden. I enjoy playing poker with the family.

You take their money?

I donate once in a while.

What is your favorite sport other than baseball?

Basketball. I love basketball.

You played what position?

Forward and center.

How long did you play?

Until my junior year of high school.

Favorite player?

Kobe Bryant.

I think his attitude toward the game. He has a winner mentality. His mindset is nobody can stop him and [he] does the best he can to win championships.

Who is the person you met and were like, 'Whoa, that's pretty cool?'

I've met a lot of these basketball players that I enjoy watching -- KD [Kevin Durant], Carmelo [Anthony], Kyrie [Irving]. If I were to pick one guy, it would probably be Jeet [Derek Jeter], when I first met him at Yankee Stadium when I got drafted and I got to meet him. That was pretty cool.

What did he say?

I think when I got drafted, he said, 'Take as much as you can from them.' That was his advice.

Did you?

I guess. I got a good deal, I guess. (Betances received a $1 million signing bonus.)

What is the best place to go in New York?

I think Central Park is always nice. You get the experience of that whole kind of city life.

How often do you go?

I don't go too much. We go probably twice a year.
