Juan Miranda, who appeared in 18 games in May, is back with the club, batting seventh tonight as the DH. To clear roster space, the Yankees sent utilityman Kevin Russo back to AAA Scranton . . . Before the game, Mariano Rivera, who opted out of the All-Star Game with soreness in his left side and right knee, responded curiously when asked abou the state of his knee before the game. "What about my knee?,''' he said. "I don't want to talk about the knee. It's OK.'' Well, OK. Rivera spent his All-Star break on vacation at aun undisclosed location . . . Joe Girardi said of Rivera, "I think the rest probably did him a lot of good. I'm always gonna have concerns because he's so important to us. and, he's 40 years old. but he told me he felt good, and we'll continue to use him the way we always have untl he tells he can;t be used that way.'' . . . Alfredo Aceves, on the DL snce May 12 with what is officially termed a lower back strain, is expected to play catch before Saturday's game. Still no timetable for his return, or even for a throwing schedule off the mound . . . The Yankees training staff decided not to administer a previously-planned cortisone shot to Nick Johnson, on the 60-day DL with an injury to a tendon in his right wrist that required surgery, in favor of "more intense strengthening exercises,'' none of which involve swinging a bat.
