You had to know it was coming. Shaun Suisham was one of the most consistent place-kickers in the league through the first 10 games, but he missed two field goals in The Skins' 7-6 loss to the Cowboys and then missed a 23-yarder Sunday that would've likely sealed a win against the Saints.
On Tuesday, the Redskins released Suisham and replaced him with former Florida State kicker Graham Gano. Zorn's critics will say that he stuck with the kicker too long, but I think he hated to give up on Suisham based on one bad game. But the moment Suisham's kick sailed wide right, you knew it was over.
I remember watching Gano in college, but I didn't see any of his work in the UFL. This will be like a month-long tryout for him. Suisham will get a full-season's salary and hopefully land another gig down the road. I've known Suisham for years and I know how horribly he felt about costing his team the game.
But again, it doesn't come to that if the Redskins put it in the end zone after having first-and-goal on the 4-yard line. Show a little faith in your offense after they've scored 30 points in a game.
