Logic says Rodgers won't play this week

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said the only thing that needs to happen before he can be cleared to return from his broken collarbone is a positive scan.

His coach, Mike McCarthy, said that no additional tests were scheduled.

“We’re not going to continue doing that,” McCarthy said Wednesday after Rodgers was a limited participant in practice.

So unless there’s another way to check how the bone has healed, logic would suggest that Rodgers won’t return for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

“I think you have to just follow the protocol of the rehab,” McCarthy said. “This is a medical situation just like every other player, and they have a plan for him to progress, and hopefully he comes in here [Thursday] and feels better, and maybe he’ll be able to do more [Thursday], so we’ll see.”

Rodgers actually returned to practice last week, taking two days of individual drills in advance of the Thanksgiving game at the Detroit Lions. His workload Wednesday was about the same.

Reports surfaced over the weekend that the Packers were debating whether to shut down Rodgers for the rest of the season if they are out of realistic playoff contention. McCarthy denied that the Packers have considered this, although that raised the question of whether they should at least discuss the idea.

On his ESPN Milwaukee radio show Tuesday, Rodgers maintained that his desire is to return this season no matter what the circumstances.

On Wednesday, Rodgers appeared to be bothered by the various reports about his status. When asked about the results of Tuesday’s tests, Rodgers said: “I’m not really going to get into any of that. I don’t think that’s appropriate. There’s enough people who are supposedly getting leaks from this organization that can make their own assumptions.”
