Lynell Hamilton not fully gone from Saints

A lot of readers have been asking about New Orleans running back Lynell Hamilton, who technically was “waived/injured’’ after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. The common question is: Even though Hamilton will miss the season, why would the Saints simply cut a guy they seemed to think highly of?

HamiltonWell, the answer is the Saints were just playing by NFL rules and Hamilton is actually back with the team. Once he cleared waivers, and nobody was going to claim a running back with a torn ACL, Hamilton’s rights reverted back to the Saints.

Very quietly on Monday, they placed him on their injured reserve list, which means he’s ineligible to play this season. But he’ll be able to work with the team’s training staff to get his knee healthy for next year.

One other thing related to Hamilton: The Saints signed veteran Ladell Betts to take Hamilton's place as the big back in the rotation to go with Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas. It could work out exactly that way. But there are no guarantees Betts is the answer. He's coming off a knee injury and the Saints will monitor his performance closely the rest of the preseason. If he does well, he'll stay. If he doesn't, the Saints still could look for a running back who gets cut by another team.
