NEW ORLEANS – Sometimes, you have to go beyond words to describe a performance by Drew Brees. Sometimes, you have to turn to numbers.
That’s what we’re going to do here as we pass on some excellent research by ESPN’s Stats & Information:
Brees was great in every facet of the passing game against the Giants, but especially when throwing the ball downfield.
Brees passes by yards: On passes of under 10 yards, Brees was a solid 9 for 12 for 80 yards, one touchdown and a 120.1 passer rating. But on passes of over 10 yards, Brees was even better. He was 14 for 18, for 289 yards, three touchdowns and a perfect passer rating of 158.3.
Brees passing by direction: Brees did most of his damage Sunday against the Giants when looking up the middle and down the right side of the field. Only two of Brees' 14 TD this season have been on throws left of the left hash mark.
Brees vs. Giants quarterback Eli Manning
Brees play action passing: The Saints rushed the ball a season-high 39 times against the Giants. This commitment to the run helped set up the play action pass for Brees, accounting for all four of his TD passes. In play-action situations Brees was 10-15, with four touchdowns and a passer rating of 144.2. All 10 completions went for first downs.
