TAMPA, Fla. – A few quick thoughts on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers second pick of the second round.
The pick: Ali Marpet, OL, Hobart College
My take: The Bucs traded up four spots to get Marpet as they continued to overhaul their offensive line. Penn State tackle Donovan Smith was drafted earlier in the second round. The Bucs are trying to rebuild an offensive line that surrendered 52 sacks and didn't block well in the running game last season.
In the mix: General manager Jason Licht said Marpet will get a chance to compete for a starting job immediately. Logan Mankins is set at left guard, but the Bucs likely view Marpet as a candidate to replace Patrick Omameh on the right side.
Out of nowhere: Hobart is far from a football factory. It's a Division III school that hadn't had a player drafted since 1948. Marpet's big break was scoring an invitation to the Senior Bowl. That's where the Bucs first spotted him. When he followed that with an impressive showing at the combine, the Bucs were sold.
