No consolation cocktail needed this time for Saints QB Matt Flynn

METAIRIE, La. -- New Orleans Saints quarterback Matt Flynn had been on Twitter just one week before he mastered the art. Flynn tweeted out a picture of his consolation Bloody Mary after being released by the New York Jets in September.

A few weeks later, it was a consolation margarita after Flynn went unsigned following a workout with the Dallas Cowboys.

But then Flynn had to go and ruin it when he got signed by the Saints this week to back up Drew Brees after veteran Luke McCown had season-ending back surgery.

Flynn didn’t think another cocktail would send the right message now that he was back in the game.

“I was thinking about it after I got done working out here,” Flynn said. “I was like, ‘Man, if they don’t sign me, I gotta tweet another drink or something.’”

Instead, the former LSU quarterback, who lives about an hour away from New Orleans with his wife and son, made a crack about his hunting season coming to an end:

Flynn said his sister finally convinced him to join the social-media world in August. And the Bloody Mary tweet was one of his first.

“I was like, this is kinda fun,” said Flynn, who was surprised by how much attention the tweets earned -- especially from websites that took them to another level.

“I got a lot of comments from friends and stuff sending me crazy articles, like, ‘Matt Flynn gets cut, gets drunk,’” said Flynn, who quickly added, “Not true.”
