Around the NFC West: Good to be back

Around the NFC West: July 9, 2013

Good morning, NFC West.

It's good to be back after taking the family to California and taking my wife to Chicago. We celebrated our wedding anniversary Monday with a nine-hour drive -- me, my wife and our sons making our way back to the Pacific Northwest from the Northern California coast.

Vacation is about getting away. We did that, but compelling news stories captured our attention.

Bravo to the Arizona Cardinals for donating $100,000 to families of police and firefighters killed or seriously injured on the job. The donation was made shortly after the Arizona-based Hotshot firefighting crew lost 19 men nine days ago.

NFL training camps remain more than two weeks away, so football-related news will remain scarce. We've got some off-field stories to discuss, notably potential punishment for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks in relation to an ongoing assault investigation.

We'll cover that ground and other West-related issues as the day and week progresses. Thanks for coming along.
