ESPN's Adam Schefter thinks Larry Fitzgerald's new deal with the Arizona Cardinals will raise expectations for holdout Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson.
I have no doubt that is the case.
Johnson congratulated Fitzgerald on the deal via Twitter. Fitzgerald replied by suggesting Johnson was up next.
A few significant differences:
Fitzgerald had only one season remaining on his contract; Johnson has two.
Fitzgerald's previous contract prevented the Cardinals from trading him or naming him its franchise player; Johnson's contract contains no such language.
Fitzgerald, as a wide receiver, has a better chance of playing well into his 30s; Johnson, as a running back, does not.
Fitzgerald has made huge plays in playoff games, including the go-ahead touchdown reception in a Super Bowl; Johnson hasn't had that opportunity to this point in his career.
Those are a few differences. We also do not yet know how Fitzgerald's deal is structured. That information will circulate around the league once the NFL approves the deal and copies are filed with the league and NFL Players Association.
