Baldwin, Peterson among rookie candidates

Three of the players under consideration for the NFL's top weekly honors played for or against the NFC West in opening week.

A quick look at their Week 1 exploits:

  • Doug Baldwin, Seattle Seahawks receiver: The undrafted free agent finished with four catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. His 55-yard scoring reception featured 48 yards after the catch, according to the NFL. Baldwin also had a 12-yard reception on third-and-10. The Seahawks thought they knew Baldwin could become a good slot receiver. They can feel better about it now.

  • Patrick Peterson, Arizona Cardinals cornerback: His 89-yard punt return for a touchdown broke a 21-21 tie and gave the Cardinals the lead for good in the fourth quarter. Peterson had some rookie struggles in coverage, but his big-play ability is undeniable.

  • Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers quarterback: The Cardinals haven't been very good on defense lately, but Newton was exceptional by just about any measure. There were times when Arizona got pressure and it didn't matter. Newton's 422-yard passing effort makes him a favorite to win the award even though there are other strong candidates.

The Green Bay Packers' Randall Cobb and the Washington Redskins' Ryan Kerrigan are also candidates. You can vote here.
