Spagnuolo: Neck strain for Jason Smith

Right tackle Jason Smith might have escaped a serious neck injury during the St. Louis Rams' game at Dallas in Week 7.

Smith, carted off on a stretcher following a collision involving his head and neck, apparently suffered a strained neck and blow to the head. That was the word from Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo during his postgame radio interview Sunday.

That's a positive development after medical personnel removed Smith's facemask to access him while administering treatment on the field. Fox had reported that Smith was experiencing "labored breathing" while on the field. Smith was able to move his hands in acknowledging the crowd as he left the field.
