Where 49ers stand after adding Colt McCoy

Colt McCoy NFL Stats

Colt McCoy's addition to the San Francisco 49ers via trade from the Cleveland Browns gives the team additional young depth behind Colin Kaepernick, and at an affordable price.

San Francisco is sending fifth- and seventh-round picks to the Browns for McCoy and a sixth-rounder, according to Matt Maiocco.

McCoy is 26 years old and has made 21 starts. He gives the 49ers a younger player with starting experience, a third-round draft pedigree and a manageable salary.

McCoy is scheduled to earn $2.325 million in 2013, the final year of his rookie deal.

Teams are continually looking to fill needs in free agency so that they can more easily emphasize value over need in the draft. The 49ers held a league-high 14 choices in the 2013 draft before making the move for McCoy. They'll have ample opportunities to draft a quarterback and very well could select one, but pressure to do so is diminished now.

McCoy should appeal to the 49ers for his mobility. He also has experience in a West Coast-type offense. As the chart shows, McCoy has not produced at a high level in the NFL. He has a 74.6 NFL passer rating and 41.6 Total QBR as a starter, well below NFL averages over that period (87.9 passer rating and 56.8 QBR for all starts since 2010).

Then again, the 49ers have succeeded in getting more than expected from quarterbacks since coach Jim Harbaugh, offensive coordinator Greg Roman and quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst took over in 2011.
