2013 NFC West Favorites vs. Underdogs

Dave Tuley's latest Insider piece on NFL point spreadsInsider provides a good conversation starter here on the NFC West blog.

Tuley ranks the 10 most appealing single-game plays based on spreads posted for the 2013 regular season. He's tempted to take the St. Louis Rams and four points at home against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4, but he also thinks additional points could be available if the 49ers open the season quickly.

With an assist from Joe Fortenbaugh of National Football Post (via Tuley), I've put together a chart showing how many times NFC West teams show up as favorites, underdogs or pick-em. The 49ers and Seahawks are getting lots of respect. Seattle is a pick-em choice at Atlanta, for example. That info is in the first chart.

2013 NFC West Matchups by Point Spreads

The Arizona Cardinals aren't favored in a single game. They enjoy pick-em status at home against the Indianapolis Colts, at home against the Rams and on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The second chart ranks NFC West matchups from largest to smallest point spreads. There are no point spreads for Week 17 games because playoff races could affect teams' motivation levels in unpredictable ways.

The 49ers and Seahawks are each 2.5-point favorites at home against the other. Home-field advantage is generally worth three points. As always, sports books design spreads to invite betting on both sides, while divisional bloggers design items to provoke conversation.

Arizona gets six points at home against Seattle in Week 7, the first matchup between the teams since the Cardinals suffered a 58-0 road defeat to the Seahawks. Any takers?
