MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Vikings shuffled the bottom of their roster on Monday afternoon, cutting their most prominent undrafted free agent from a year ago and adding a wide receiver who will hope to continue his career in his college stadium.
The Vikings released receiver Kain Colter, whom the team signed as an undrafted free agent a year ago, and picked up former University of Minnesota receiver Isaac Fruechte after a tryout at the Vikings' rookie camp over the weekend. The team also released former Saginaw Valley State guard Jesse Somsel.
Colter's $8,000 signing bonus was the largest the Vikings gave an undrafted free agent a year ago, and he came to the team with some notoriety after leading the charge for Northwestern University football players to unionize while he played quarterback there. Colter spent the 2014 season on the Vikings' practice squad.
He'll give way to Fruechte, who becomes the fourth native Minnesotan on the Vikings' 90-man roster. The Caledonia, Minnesota, native joins wide receiver Adam Thielen (Detroit Lakes), cornerback Marcus Sherels (Rochester) and offensive lineman Carter Bykowski (Eden Prairie). Fruechte played three years for the Gophers after transferring from Rochester Community and Technical College, catching 18 passes for 292 yards and a touchdown as a senior. Fruechte and guard Zac Epping were the two former Gophers to try out with the Vikings last weekend.
