Most significant move: WR Tandon Doss seemed like a lock to make the roster when training camp began because of his experience as a punt returner. Doss didn't play last season because of an ankle injury but led the NFL in punt-return average in 2013. However, he was passed on the depth chart by rookie Rashad Greene, who is averaging 10.0 yards per return in the preseason. Doss, who had just one return for 5 yards, didn't do enough at receiver to earn one of the final two spots as part of the roster moves to reach the NFL-mandated 75-player limited.
Fowler, Wells to IR: The Jacksonville Jaguars placed DE Dante Fowler Jr. (knee) and OT Josh Wells (hand) on IR. It was not unexpected in Fowler's case because he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee on the first day of rookie minicamp in May. Wells recently had surgery on the thumb he injured in the Jaguars' second preseason game against the New York Giants.
Help needed: The Jaguars may also be in the market for a pass-rusher now that DE Andre Branch has a sprained MCL in his left knee and will miss significant time. The Jaguars are going to move some players around to compensate for the loss, but they also could sign a player from another team in this round of cuts or try to add any of the remaining free agents, though none are particularly attractive at this point. It's also not out of the question for the Jaguars to make a trade, either, though GM David Caldwell is generally hesitant to give up draft picks because they're so valuable for a franchise that is still rebuilding.
Jaguars' cuts: LB Mister Alexander, DE Camaron Beard, OL Cody Booth, CB Tommie Campbell, S Desmond Cooper, DT Eric Crume, WR Tandon Doss, LB Khairi Fortt, Connor Hamlett, WR Greg Jenkins (waived/injured), K/P Kasey Redfern, OL Jack Rummells, QB Jeff Tuel.
