Seattle Seahawks cut 23 players, including Will Blackmon

Most significant move: Veteran defensive back Will Blackmon had spent most of the summer as the first-team nickelback. But the Seahawks terminated his contract and will now go in a different direction at that spot. One option is Marcus Burley, and the other is rookie Tye Smith.

While the Seahawks have pretty good depth at cornerback, they made a move at safety, acquiring Kelcie McCray from the Kansas City Chiefs. Per Adam Schefter, the team gave up a fifth-round pick in the deal, indicating they probably see more than a special-teams/depth role for McCray. The 26-year-old is on his fourth team in four seasons and has never started a game.

The team continues to prepare for the possibility that Kam Chancellor isn't going to show up next week. With the opener looming, it seems unlikely that McCray would be able to come in and beat out Dion Bailey and DeShawn Shead for the starting spot. But it's possible that coach Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider are thinking more long-term with the addition of McCray, who is signed through the 2016 season.

More moves at RB: The Seahawks officially announced that Robert Turbin has been waived with an injury designation. That leaves Christine Michael and Thomas Rawls as Marshawn Lynch's backups -- for now. The team is expected to announce a one-year deal with Fred Jackson later this weekend.

The Seahawks kept two fullbacks -- Derrick Coleman and Will Tukuafu -- on their initial 53-man roster.

That's a total of five running backs. When the Seahawks add Jackson, it's likely they'll part with one -- Tukuafu, Coleman or Rawls.

What's next: The Seahawks have a couple of priorities in the coming days. One, they have to finalize the Jackson signing and decide which running back (or possibly other player) they're parting with.

Two, they have to continue to form a strategy at safety, something they've undoubtedly been working on for weeks. The team will continue to get guys ready to start in Chancellor's place. And we'll find out in a matter of days whether the Pro Bowl safety is willing to miss game checks if the two sides can't come to a resolution.
