TEMPE, Ariz. – There was an unexpected addition to the Arizona Cardinals’ injury report on Thanksgiving.
Deone Bucannon missed Thursday’s practice with a concussion, but returned to the field Friday in limited form, coach Bruce Arians said. Bucannon began complaining of a headache after Wednesday’s practice, which led the Cardinals to put the second-year safety-linebacker hybrid through the NFL’s concussion protocol. He passed on Friday.
His status for Sunday’s game at San Francisco wasn’t determined as of Friday afternoon.
“I’m going to be very careful with Deone,” Arians said. “I have to fight him, but we’ll be careful.”
Bucannon said he began experiencing symptoms on Monday, the day after Arizona beat Cincinnati 34-31, but Arians said it’s uncertain when Bucannon suffered the actual concussion.
“It could possibly have happened in the game and [Wednesday] was the first time he worked out again and noticed it,” Arians said. “So that could’ve happened in the game, or happened in practice.”
Bucannon said this was the first concussion he has suffered. He said the symptoms were “not bad.”
If Bucannon can’t play, Arians said linebacker Sean Weatherspoon will fill his role in Arizona’s base defense and then “we’ll mix and match” lineups in nickel and dime. But Bucannon believes he’ll play.
“It’s coach’s decision,” he said. “I love playing and I love playing with these guys. So, like I said, it’s coach’s decision. It’s not mine. He knows how I feel about the situation. It’s out of my hands.”
